Hope was about to spend yet another Christmas in foster care. Her foster family struggled financially and Hope’s Family Permanency Specialist at PromiseShip knew she would not be receiving much that Christmas. As an older youth, Hope had grown accustomed to going without gifts during the holidays. Her Family Permanency Specialist knew that Hope had always enjoyed playing sports, especially basketball. It helps her relieve stress from her daily life and takes her mind off worrying about her future–even if for a little while. When asked what she wanted for Christmas, she said she would like a basketball of her own and maybe some dress clothes for job interviews.
Thanks to a group of caring and generous individuals, we were able to grant Hope’s wish. But we were also able do so much more than fund Hope. Nine other older foster youth also received Christmas gifts that year. Hope became the inspiration for what is now called Fund Hope. She represents how we hope to help other older foster youth like her.
For older foster youth, special occasions, like birthdays and holidays, are not always celebrated or remembered. The goal of Fund Hope is to ensure older youth are not forgotten on their birthdays or during the holiday season. We want to instill hope in every youth and help them build a positive self-worth as they near adulthood.
